Types of Embroidery Floss Storage

Below are some of the most common ways to organize embroidery floss. I have included both ways to organize your whole collection, as well as methods to organize embroidery floss for single projects.

1. Bags for storage

Bags are a cheap and economical way to organize embroidery floss. You can use simple plastic storage bags, such as Ziplock sandwich bags, or transparent pencil cases.

You can use this method to organize embroidery floss for a single project. Or separate your whole collection by colour.

If using the method to separate your collection, you can place labels on the outside of the bags or place cards inside the bags, so you can read them from the outside.

2. Store your floss in Binders

Binders are a great way to organize embroidery floss if you need to move it from place to place. You can use a classic 3 ring binder for home use or zipper binders when on the go.

To organize embroidery floss in a binder, you will need clear binder inserts and embroidery cards. You can find long Stitch Bows, binders, and inserts from DMC. Or you can use floss bobbins in a specialized floss keeper.

Bobbin boxes are another great way to organize embroidery floss. You can store a lot of floss and keep it organized easily. Bobbin boxes are inexpensive, and they are very easy to store.

This is how I organize my floss. However, one drawback is, the floss can get creased on the cards, making it harder to work with. If you have this problem, simply iron the thread before use.

If you have room on the back of a door, you can use the door hanging storage system. It is similar to the bobbin binder method.

However, instead of having several pages in a binder, you have one single organizer. This method is nice if you do not have to move your floss.

Cabinets with shallow drawers are another popular way to organize embroidery floss. You can leave the floss in the skeins or use bobbins.

You can find all types of artist drawers, from clear plastic to vintage designs. Look for a cabinet that works well with your decor. You also want to make sure that the skeins fit easily without folding.
